George Orwell’s 1984 was written as a warning for future generations, but is used by institutions and totalitarians as a blueprint to rule.
George Orwell’s literary classic explores a range of dystopian themes. One of the central issues was how the destruction of individualism by authority could be achieved through threats of violence and isolation. The hierarchy protects itself by using every institution with the goal of rewriting or crushing every collective experience that doesn't solidify their power.
DEFRA’s regulations are the epitome of this totalitarian mindset. No recognition that every cattery is as different as every cat and every owner, yet DEFRA wrote universal regulations for everyone that were so badly thought out that local authorities couldn't apply them correctly or consistently.
"What can you do, thought Winston, against the lunatic […] who gives your arguments a fair hearing and simply persists in his lunacy?"
DEFRA’s dialogues and zoom calls have changed nothing. And while we’re the ones exposing the lunacy of these regulations, as far as DEFRA is concerned we’re the lunatics for thinking we could challenge their overreaching, intrusive and nonsensical regulations.

There are thousands of us and only one DEFRA and only a lunatic would spend their time defending their mistakes by blaming everyone else rather than accepting responsibility for their mistakes and putting them right.
“It was merely the substitution of one piece of nonsense for another.”
From the moment that the new regulations were released, our industry has been losing boarding capacity. And the only progress we've made is that zoom calls have replaced refusing to communicate.
