The constant failure of government institutions to even get the simple jobs right just leaves everyone speechless …
DEFRA replaced decades of more or less pointless hurdles to get a license to operate a cattery with a steaming pile of uninformed bureaucratic shite and chaos.
Making it more difficult to obtain a license on the basis that our entire industry was rife with mistreatment and negligence is an absolute nonsense.
But in my opinion DEFRA invented legislation that mandated deliberate cruelty and neglect and would in effect allow all catteries to be prosecuted under the 2006 animal welfare act!
DEFRA wrote legislation that included a rating system that had two standards, one higher and one lower.
Welfare was the justification of the legislation, but animal welfare doesn’t have two standards and isn’t a checkbox decision - There is just one best practice, and any deviation from this idea is just bureaucratic fuckwittery.
DEFRA wrote regulations that allowed local authorities to close me down if I didn’t have 30k to invest in new pens because DEFRA decided that the previously legal sleeping platform is now a cm too small …
And for some reason DEFRA didn’t know that cats come in all different sizes and the smaller the space they can sleep in, the happier and warmer they will be.
DEFRA wrote arbitrary regulations covering minimum temperatures of sleeping compartments.
But all the local vets not only keep recovering cats and dogs, distressed and ill in the same room, and they’re crammed into rabbit hutch sized spaces with half the surface covered with a littler tray and they have no regulations for minimum temperature.
DEFRA wrote legislation that includes a permanent lockdown rule to work in this industry because regardless that most catteries are run by single people or couples, the premises can never be left unattended.
But neither Cat’s Protection or vets have to pay anyone to stay on the premises when they go home or want to go out with their spouse.
And all of this shit came out of someone’s head, and that someone has shit for brains.
