DEFRA: Bureaucratic Dysfunction

DEFRA are not responsible for any improvements in our sector. Quite the contrary, they are wholly responsible for driving out expertise, harming community businesses and raising costs of holidays during a cost of living crisis.

All that DEFRA and Local Authorities are doing is standing around pointing the finger at each other … refusing to recognise what they’ve done or taking responsibility for cleaning up their own mess.

DEFRA_Blame

DEFRA and Local Authorities are ignoring the fact that behind the faux concerns, shit-eating smiles and endless delays, bureaucrats would prefer to be paid to do nothing than do their jobs - And that’s a huge difference between bureaucrats and those they abuse - No one else requires a masters degree in responsibility avoidance and there would be serious consequences for anyone else who refused to do their job for three years straight.

The solutions are already known:

After over three years of doing nothing, DEFRA needs to revoke the entire regulatory framework and get out of the way.
The regulations need to be split into an advisory for newbies and regulations that can be demonstrated to improve animal welfare.
Any impingement or restriction on our personal lives, interference in our terms and conditions, time-wasting paperwork and any intrusive demands on everything from pen size to staffing levels are not universal or suitable areas for regulation.

Local authorities across the country must be relieved from the responsibility of inspections because as institutions, they have no standard practices or procedures, they can’t resolve issues and are unable to apply DEFRA’s ridiculous regulations with any consistency.

As small private businesses, we don't have time to deal with unelected institutions blaming each other while displaying a callous disregard for animal welfare and their inactions force people to find uninsured, sub-standard and unregulated alternatives just to visit relatives.
